Abstract:
For an industry, implementing the right maintenance strategy is useful in meeting
the current challenges of manufacturing companies that are cost, delivery time
and quality. The process of determining the right maintenance strategy requires
the consideration of multiple factors and due to this the process is becomes a
complex decision problem. In this research, first the maintenance system of the
selected case company is assessed using structured questionnaire and
documentation review that are vital for the study. Then the collected questionnaire
is analyzed using SPSS and the result shows there is poor implementation of
maintenance system in the organization. Also from documentation review the
downtime records of previous budget years has been taken and analyzed. The
result shows that a major downtime is related to machinery breakdown causing
loss of raw materials estimated around 20million birr with in three budget year.
Therefore, in this study a team of experts are organized to make a decision in
selecting a maintenance strategy to overcome this problem of the organization.
For resolving the complex decision problem in selecting a maintenance strategy
among proposed alternatives an MCDA tool Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP)
is selected. The research findings show that among the selected main criteria
value add, cost and implementation capability, implementation capability is given
the highest priority by the decision makers. Also out of the five alternative
maintenance strategies proposed Reliability Centered Maintenance strategy found
to be the right maintenance strategy for the case company. Finally, this research
proposed the steps in implementing the selected maintenance strategy from
theoretical aspects.
