The study was conducted on randomly selected 236 households that are estimated to represent all classes of income levels; low, middle and high. These 236 households were selected randomly from Fassilo, Sefene Selam, Belay Zelek and Atsi Tewodros sub city‘swhich has 8 kebeles of the study area in Bahir Dar. Weekly waste generations from those households were collected and separated into its composition and each waste composition were recorded. This has been conducted for four consecutive weeks to determine the average weekly household waste generation rate, per capital daily generation rate and waste generation per area. In these studies, the wastes were characterized in to eight groups. These are organic waste, plastic waste, paper waste, glass wastes, ash, textiles wastes, metal wastes and wood wastes. The study showed that solid waste generation rate has direct relationship with level of family‘s income. The findings of this study showed that low, middle and high-income level waste generate 0.18 kg/cap/day, 0.31 kg/cap/day and 0.37 kg/cap/day, respectively; and on average, waste generates 0.28 kg/cap/day and total waste generation per area is 4,835.05 kg/km 2 .day. Results of experimental analysis of waste compositions showed high contents of organic waste (32%) followed by ash waste (26%), plastic waste (12%), textile waste (11%), glass waste (7%), wood waste (5%), metal waste (4%) and paper (3%). The survey analysis also showed that illegal solid waste disposal in open spaces is common practice in the study area and some of the main reasons raised by the respondents were the inappropriate placement and insufficient number of transfer stations and communal containers.
