dc.description.abstract The growing industrial development is leading to the production of contaminants that are seriously affecting the ecosystem; especially pharmaceutical industry that produces residuals containing high complexity compounds, which are potentially dangerous when directly sent to the water sources, causing aquatic toxicity and gene toxicity. It is necessary to develop effective technologies for their treatment and/or recovery considering the existing environmental regulations. The effective way to remove the drugs (antibiotics, beta blocker, and lipid regulators), solvents, unreacted raw materials and other pollutants is through Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP). Electro fenton process is an emerging treatment technology for wastewater treatment which utilizes hydroxyl radicals to oxidize hazardous contaminants and is especially useful to treat non-biodegradable compounds that are not easily degraded in conventional wastewater treatment plants. In this research, treatment of a pharmaceutical wastewater (PhW) obtained from Cedilla pharmaceutical factory by electro fenton (EF) process was investigated. The sample was characterized before treatment by determining the COD, BOD5 , TDS, TSS, Turbidity, Total hardness and Conductivity of wastewater. The effects of Electrolysis temperature, Fe 2+ concentration and Electrolysis time were studied by keeping constant the electrode gap, electrode type, pH, current density, and H 2O2 dose. The experiments were designed by Design Expert software and Central Composite Design (CCD) was applied to determine effect of experimental variables, significance of the parameters (by ANOVA) and optimum conditions for the highest COD removal. The optimum condition parameters values were Electrolysis temperature of 35.35 0 C, Iron concentration of 0.42 mM and Electrolysis time of 59.56min at which high efficiency of COD removal from wastewater (94.3967%) was achieved. The treated water was characterized. The physicochemical of water reduced; COD 94.4%, BOD 5 91.4%, TDS 90.7%, TSS 91.7% and Total Hardiness 82.5% removal efficiency was achieved. Generally cedilla pharmaceutical wastewater was treated by electro fenton process and its physicochemical properties were determined. en_US
