Abstract:
The objective of this study is an investigation on scaffolding health and safety risk management in a case of an ongoing building construction project in Bahir Dar city. The scaffolding structure activities in Bahir Dar city building construction is did not consider health and safety-related issues, also during wisdom tower construction, there are many people injured and died due to the collapse of the timber scaffolding structure. This research is identifying the major cause of scaffolding risk, evaluates the stakeholder's responsibility in building construction caused by scaffolding health and safety risk also identifies the consequence of scaffolding health and safety risk management. The study contributes to the building construction companies, for recognizing and controlling hazards in the workplace, creating awareness among project employees. The research methodology is designed for answering the objectives of the study with random sampling techniques from 85 valid respondents. The research shows that the leading cause of scaffolding risks are significant objects falling from height (RII=0.88) and improper use of safety material (RII=0.85), poor personal training for workers. In building construction projects there is no emphasized for risk and safety management of scaffolding works. RII analysis results show scaffolding risk is mainly minimized by the use of hamlets protect from falling materials, and other protective equipment provided as ranked first ( RII=0.85). The case study building construction sites scaffolding health and safety risk shows that Bahir Dar University Medical laboratory and Misrak Tsehay S.C building construction project has the same scaffolding construction procedure and using, also exposing health and safety-related scaffolding risk, but Ethiopia commercial bank Bahir Dar district building project scaffolding structure construction emphasis the scaffolding structure with health and safety concerned. Workers use a complete scaffolding component, before using any scaffolding footing, guardrails, cross bracing, standards, ledgers, tie boards, and other components. Scaffolding activities with a confined area use a safe net because pedestrian and vehicles are exposed for object falling from the scaffolding.
