Household solidwasteassessmentonphysicalcompositionandgenerationrateare
veryimportanttochooseproperwastemanagementoptions.Thus,theobjectivesof
this studyweretocharacterizethecompositionsofhousehold’ssolidwaste,toanalyze
its generationrateandtoassesstheattitudeofpeopletowardsitsmanagemet.The
researchwasconductedinDangilaTownonrandomsamplesof73residentialhouses
whichweredeterminedfromstrataofincomebasedsocialstatusoflow,middleand
high. Thestudywasconductedinarepresentativekebeleofthetown,fromthetotal
of existingfive.Questionersweredistributedamongtheselectedhouseholdstoassess
their attitudetowardssolidwastemanagemetandtheirsocialstatus.Solidwaste
generation rateandcompositionweredonebyexperimentalmethodfromcollected
and storedsolidwastesforsevendays.Thecollecteddatawasanalyzedbyusing
MS-excel program.Thecompositionresultshowedthatabout46.7%byweightofthe
solid wasteisdecomposabletypewhichcouldbeusedforcompostpreparationand
the recyclablewasteconstitutedabout15.1%.Therefore,atotalof61.8%solidwaste
in thetowncancreatejobopportunityforunemployedresidentsinthetown.The
domestic solidwastegenerationratewas0.26kg/c/day.Thismadethedailytotalsolid
wastegenerationofhouseholdstobe21.49tons.Thestudyrevealedthatabout39.72,
79.45 and64.38%oftheresidentspaychargeforsolidwastemanagement,knowthe
importanceofsolidwastesegregationandhaveknowledgeonthelegislationregarding
solid wastemanagement,respectively.However,about43.84%oftheresidentsburn
wasteasanoptionfordisposing.Theinvestigationofthehouseholds’attitudetowards
solid wastemanagementshowedthatabout76.71%ofthemhaveawarenessaboutthe
impact ofimpropersolidwastemanagementontheenvironmentandabout68.49%of
the respondentshaveanawarenessfortheimpactofimpropersolidwastemanagement
on health.Generally,theresearchoutcomeshowedthatmostoftheresidentsdonot
haveaknowledgeproblemaboutsolidwastemanagement,butthereislimitationof
putting itintopractice. |
