Abstract:
The objective of the study was to investigate the overall causes of kidnapping and its implication
on human security in case of Tach Armachiho Woreda. More specifically, the study attempted to
identify the actors of kidnapping, the pushing factors of kidnapping that motivate actors to
kidnap, examined the impacts of kidnapping on human security, and the effectiveness of the
concerned stakeholders in minimizing kidnapping cases as well. In doing so, the researcher was
employed a mixed approach, which was followed by questionnaires, semi-structured interviews,
and document analysis as instruments of data collection. Under this research approach,
sequential exploratory design method is utilized. Following this, the researcher was used
purposive and snowball sampling techniques for qualitative data while the stratified sampling
for quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis while
quantitative data were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics like percentages, frequency,
and table. The result of the study showed that local bandits, unemployed youth, security agents,
and agents of local bandits are the main actors of kidnapping in the study area. The study also
revealed that the pushing factors of kidnapping includes, lack of available employment
opportunity, Proliferation of illegal small arms and light weapons, for the attainment of money ,
revenge, and poor security system. Therefore, these pushing factors are escalating the rate of
kidnapping and the insecurity of people. All in all, economic motive is the main pushing factor
of kidnapping. As it was confirmed by respondents, the rural part of the Woreda is more
vulnerable to kidnapping. Findings indicated that kidnapping poses a serious threat to the
community of Tach Armachiho Woreda psychologically, socially, economically, and politically.
Hence, governmental and non-governmental institutions in collaboration should create
awareness to the local community especially; the society should cooperate with the security
agents and administration wing of the woreda also take immediate measures against offenders
are the recommendation of this study
