Abstract:
This study attempted to investigate teachers, parents and students themselves
rating of the general level of ABECS students' academic competence in grade 5,
second cycle primary schools in three woredas of Sou th Gondar namely
Kemkem, Fogera and Dera.
To verify the basic questions, 208 students, 79 grade five teachers and directors,
,
30 parents were selected. Questionnaires and interviews were employed as data
collection tools in the analysis of the study. With this regard, the questionnaire
was administered for both teachers and students. But, interview was used for
unit leaders and directors teachers and parents.

Hence, the data collected through questionnaire was analyzed using t:.test. So,
the obtained results from the sample population of teachers and directors,
parents and students themselves portrayed that the academic competence of
ABECS students manifested to be low and the program is found to be less
satisfactory in the quality of students' academic competence. Teachers and
parents rating the ABEES students as low. performers and ABECS students
considered themselves as incompetent and inefficient. There are problems in
ABECS like ,Shortage ·of well-trained facilitators and facilities and materials, less
attention given to the program and Lack of flexibility in scheduling, etc. were
found by the study. Together with the above mentioned conclusion,
recommendations like recruiting and training of facilitators necessity of closer
supervision, allocation of necessary resources and implementing a flexible time
table for ABECS, were made.
