Abstract:
Currently, equal status of political leadership participation of women is a prerequisite for
democratic governance. However, women continue to be marginalized from the political sphere
due to attitudinal social and institutional challenges. The purpose of this study was to identify the
women’s participation in political leadership in Ganta Afeshum Woreda. A case study research
design was used to conduct the study. A qualitative method was also applied to undertake in
depth study using non-probability sampling by which samples officials were taken from the
public sectors in the Woreda particularly by purposive sampling technique. Interview and focus
group discussion were used to collect data that were qualitatively analyzed by thematic data
analyses technique. The results indicated that the women’s political leadership participation in
Ganta Afeshum Woreda has a low status as women were underrepresented in the various
leadership positions. Although some strategies existed in the sectors, they haven’t been
implemented in reality. The underrepresentation of women was attributed to the various
challenges traced to the sectors, the women themselves and the community. Regarding the basic
finding and conclusions the study recommended that to empowering women’s participation in
political leadership the woreda have to providing the education facility ,training ,giving
awareness via media and different programs at the local level should be designed a means to
overwhelm the problem of gender inequality.
