Abstract:
The mechanical property of Al 6063 metal matrix composites reinforced with glass particles was
studied. The composites were prepared by stir casting with 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20 % Wt. of
glass particles as reinforcement in the Al 6063 metal matrix. Mechanical properties (hardness,
and tensile strength) and microstructure examination were used to characterize the cast samples.
The experimental results show that the glass reinforcement resulted in ductility reduction and
improved tensile strength and hardness properties compared to the unreinforced Al 6063 metal.
The strength and hardness of the composite material is increased 5% to 15% and decreased at
20% of glass powder additive. This shows that a glass particle is a promising reinforcement
material for the production of low-cost aluminum matrix composites. The microstructure of
composites strongly influences mechanical properties such as strength, ductility, and hardness by
increasing glass concentration.
