Abstract:
Materials exist in nature are non-renewable and scares. To overcome these shortcomings and to
meet the ever increasing demand of modern day technology composites are most promising
materials of recent interest that can replace metals and insulators for different advanced devices
application. This stimulates curiosity to study aluminum metal matrix composite reinforced with
waste glass to enhance its mechanical and thermal properties. The specimens were prepared using
stir casting method and the reinforcing waste glass powder concentration were varied as 5%,
10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% by weight. This research focus on the fabrication and
characterization of Al-6061 metal matrix based composite reinforced with waste glass powder for
advanced engineering application. The fabricated composite samples were characterized using
Universal testing machine, FTIR, DSC, TGA, Optical Microscope and sieve analysis. The results
show that Aluminum metal matrix composite reinforced with glass powder has shown enhanced
the mechanical properties like wear resistance, hardness, impact, compression and tensile strength
as compared to the parent material and its maximum value are indicated at weight percentage of
[30%, 20%, 25% 20%, 20%] respectively. The micro-structural properties analyzed using optical
microscope shows good bonding between the reinforcements and matrix materials in the
composite that indicates the glass particulates are uniformly distributed in the Al 6061 matrix.
Generally the effect of waste glass powder in Aluminum metal matrix composite clearly observed
and it increased the mechanical, physical and thermal properties of the new composite materials.
