Birds are important bioindicator and biocontrol agents playing vital role in plant reproduction though pollination and seed dispersal. However, a number of natural and anthropogenic threats have been found to influence their diversity and survival. Avian species diversity, relative abundance and bird strike problems were investigated from September, 2019 to August, 2020 in and around Bahir Dar Airport. The study area was classified into four habitat types based on vegetation cover assessed during preliminary survey. Namely: bushland, grassland wetland and modified habitat. Point and transect count methods were used to collect data on the abundance of birds. Interviews were also employed to gather information about the incident and prevention of bird strike in Bahir Dar Airport. Shannon-Wiener diversity and Simpson’s similarity indices; ANOVA and chi-square statistical tests as well as percentage were mainly used for data analysis. A total of 80 bird species belonging to 15 orders and 40 families was recorded in the study area. The highest species diversity (H’=3.59) and species evenness (E=0.96) were recorded in the modified habitat during the wet season. The lowest species diversity (H’= 2.78) was recorded in grassland habitat during the dry season, whereas the lowest species evenness (E= 0.91) was recorded in wetland and grassland habitats during the dry season. Bird species richness and abundance in each habitat varied between the dry and wet seasons. Birds abundance showed no statistically significant difference as a function of season and habitat type (χ 2 (4) =2, df = 1, P= 0.157).Relative abundance of bird species showed no statistically significant difference between dry and wet seasons in the four habitat types (F (1,146) =0.86, P >0.05). Majority of the avian species were uncommon both in the dry (85.5%) and wet (84.8%) seasons. The highest bird species similarity (SI= 0.74) was observed between the bushland and modified habitats during the wet season, the lowest species similarity (SI=0.54) was also observed between the bushland and modified habitats during the dry season. Birds pose a permanent threat to aircrafts in the study area and most of the bird strike preventive methods were applied on the basis of expelling birds, not by directly killing them which was found to be encouraging from the perspective of birds conservation. The study area is rich in avifauna that requires a strong collaborative work with the airport organization to ensure birds conservation in the study area.
