Ethiopia has the largest livestock population in Africa. The total population of goat in Ethiopia are reported as 24.06 million of which 99.99% are indigenous goat breeds. This study was conducted in Awi zone Jawi district with the objective of morphological characterization of indigenous goat populations in the area. Multistage purposive sampling technique was employed based on the potential of goat production and flock size. Data were collected through observation, focal group discussion, interview, and field measurements. Phenotypic records were taken on 216 (195 females and 21 males) goats. Quantitative measurements were taken from 120 healthy goats. For trait preference a total of 120 households were interviewed. Both qualitative and quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.Qualitative descriptions of the population showed that sampled goats in Jawi district displayed high frequency for plain coat pattern (45.5%) followed by spotted (30.7%) and patchy (24.76%), with white (30.8%) and black and white colour (25.23%).Majority of the sampled goats had no wattle and ruff. Nearly, 70% of the sampled goats had beard. The overall body weight, body length, chest width, wither height, pelvic width, tail length, ear length and rump length for female goats were 26.3 kg, 59.25, 12.32, 61.5, 13.10, 12.77,14.15 and 12.36 cm, respectively. The values for males in the same order were 29.62 kg, 62.0, 13.17,64.66, 12.65,12.96,14.62 and13.24 cm. Sex and age had significant effect on body weight (p<0.05). However, except rump length, sex and age had no significant effect on linear body measurements, ear length, pelvic width and tail length (p>0.05). Body size, growth rate and meat production traits were highly preferred by goat owners. Generally, it is possible to conclude that the result revealed the smaller mean values for most morphometric measurements as compared to other districts. As recommendation, detail molecular characterization is necessary to fully describe the population. Keywords: Phenotypic characterization, goat, Jawi, live body weight, linear body measurements.
