dc.description.abstract The study was conducted in Meket district of North Wollo Zone, Ethiopia, with the main objective of investigating the smallholder sheep husbandry practice, reproductive performance and evaluates the pre-weaning growth performance of local sheep breed in Meket district, Amhara Region. Data were collected by a semi-structured questioner from 180 sample households who were selected purposively from three agro-ecologies such as low land/Kola/, midland /Woyenadega/ and high land/Dega/. Besides, on-farm monitoring trial of growth performance and survival rate of 60 lambs in different agro- ecologies of six peasant association were done for three months. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and GLM procedure of SPSS (version 22) for a survey and monitoring data, respectively. Accordingly, the overall mean landholding of respondent’s households was 0.69±0.36ha. There were respondents who do not own-land and practice land renting in crop share-out system from other farmers. From the total respondents, 91.1% of them had experienced on the feeding of crop residue for their sheep both as supplementary and basal feeds. The River was reported as the main water source for sheep during the dry season (68.72%) and wet season (41.21%). From the total respondents, 43.33% of them indicated that they had a together with family house. The major disease reported were sheep box (30.5%) anthrax (17.22%), Internal and external parasites (31.11%) and FMD (12.78%); and the majority of sheep mortality was also reported during August and September. From the total respondents, 78% of them experienced selection of both males and females for the next generation in their flocks and the main criteria were body size and color type. In the breeding season, higher lambing was reported during October, November and December. The overall age at first lambing was 12.47±1.54 months. The overall average litter size or prolificacy of the current study was 1.24±0.65. Significant differences (p<0.05) was observed in all fixed factors on birth weight. From the monitoring trial data, the overall birth weight, and 90 days growth weight of lambs was 2.21±0.45 and 8.52±0.21 respectively, whereas en_US
