dc.description.abstract This study was conducted with the objectives of to increase the production and productivity of local chicken in Dera district, South Gondar Zone, Amhara region, Ethiopia. The survey was undertaken in 6 administrative kebeles in which 4kebele from ML and 2 kebele from HL selected purposely to reflect the agro-ecology and from each agro-ecologies the kebele were selected randomly. A total of 200 households (137 from ML and 63 from HL) were selected randomly and used for this study. A total of 64 hens were selected and used for fertility and hatchability performance trial. From these hens 32 were monitored under on-station condition (in Hamusit and Arib Gebeya) and the rest 32 hens were monitored under farmer's existing practice from each agro-ecology. Focus group discussion, farm visit, and key informant interview were also done to collect relevant information. The collected data was entered to SPSS software version 23 and using Analysis of Variance, Independent sample test (t-test) and cross-tabulation at p < 0.05 significant level was done to compare the variables. The result of the study revealed that the dominant chicken production system (72.5%) in the study area were scavenging with seasonal feed supplementation and with little (11%) housing. Age at sexual maturity for males and age at first egg for local chicken was 5.88 ± 0.56 and 6.78 ± 0.73 months, respectively. There were highly significant differences (P < 0.05) between the agro-ecologies in-terms of age at sexual maturity and age at first egg. In the study area, there were no any formal type of live chicken and eggs marketing system. The price of cocks, hens, growers and eggs in dry and rainy season were 177.6 ± 14.6, 123.2 ± 12.2, 68.2 ± 7.9, 2.9 ± 0.23 and 181.2 ± 19.4, 131.6 ± 18.5, 68.1 ± 6.7, 3.1 ± 0.24, respectively. The fertility percentage, hatchability from fertile eggs and hatchability from total eggs set under on-station and under on-farm were 94 ± 6, 91.3 ± 10, 85.9 ± 10 and 89.8 ± 9, 84.1 ± 15, 75.5 ± 15, respectively. The fertility percentage, hatchability percentage from fertile eggs and from total egg set showed significance (p < 0.05) difference en_US
