Abstract:
This study strived to investigate the role of community radio as a public sphere in the case of Debre Markos University and surrounding community radio. Habermas’ public sphere model was used as the theoretical framework of the study. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed to conduct the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select participants of the study. Questionnaire, interview and document analysis were employed to gather the required data. The data was analyzed both through quantitative and qualitative method of data analysis. The quantitative data were analyzed by using simple descriptive statistic method. Tables, charts and figures were also used to analyze the quantitative data. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to code, analyze, and interpret the data, and the qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The findings of this research indicate that, DMUSCR station prepares different programs such as health and cultural program, social issues, education related issues, agriculture, women, disabled and youths’ program and entertainment. However, there is no children’s program. It is found out that the community do have very limited participation in program production, presentation, evaluation and preparation of the station’s objectives and plans. On the other hand, there is relatively better participation in calling and sending text messages. The radio station does not have forum for discussion and debate of the community except the live programs and the annual conference. Lack of awareness of the community about the operation of community radio and its difference from other media outlets are the main challenges of them to use it as a public sphere.
