dc.description.abstract The amount of damage caused by expansive soils is alarming. Damages sustained by structures include distortion and cracking of pavements and on-grade floor slabs; cracks in grade beams, walls, and drilled shafts; jammed or misaligned doors and windows; and failure of steel or concrete plinths or blocks supporting grade beams. This work analyzes the damages caused by expansive soils on selected lightweight structures in Gondar town and it tries to identify the cause of the problem and propose possible solutions. Therefore, in this study, 28 buildings, and one road were randomly selected from four expansive soil locations i.e. Azezo condominium, upper and lower military campsite, Mesgid, and Atat. A preliminary site investigation was made to identify the damaged sites. The random sampling method was used to decide the amount of sample. Then soil samples were taken at selected sites and laboratory tests were done. A questioner was prepared so that properly organized and consistent data could be collected during the assessment of the selected building. Then results were found from laboratory investigation, other collected data. The analysis was made to understand the cause, extent, and type of damage that was observed in the houses whether it is structural, construction, and Geotechnical problems. The damage has been investigated and interpreted systematically concerning the type of wall, floor slab, ceiling, door and window, staircase, beam, column, foundation, masonry wall, drainage. All the analysis led to the conclusion that all the surveyed buildings which are constructed in expansive soils show from minor to severe cracks. The major cause of damage to expansive soil is not undertaking detail geotechnical investigation before construction. Improper structural design and non-controlled drainage are also other factors for the problem of expansive soil in Gondar town. en_US
