dc.description.abstract A field experiment was conducted during 2019 main cropping season at Mersa Agricultural Campus of Woldia Uuniversity to determine the best row arrangement, planting time and variety of haricot bean intercropping with maize for productivity of the component crops. Factorial combinations of two haricot bean varieties (Awash 2 and Fetene), two time of planting (simultaneously and one week after emergence) and two row arrangements (1M:1HB and 1M:2HB) along with their sole cropping were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Drought resistant maize variety of Melkasa 2 and Awash 2 and Fetene variety of haricot bean were used as experimental planting materials. Data on phenology, vegetative growth, yield and yield related parameters of the experimental crops were taken and analyzed properly. Besides, Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) and partial budget analysis were used for estimating biological and economic benefits of the intercropping study, respectively. The analysis of variance results indicated that most of yield and yield components of maize and haricot bean were significantly affected by the main effect of row arrangement and planting time of haricot bean varieties. Phenological data of maize were not significantly influenced due to main effects and, their interactions and of treatments. The main effect of planting pattern, planting time of haricot bean varieties and cropping system had significantly influenced ear length, number of seeds per ear, ear weight, grain yield, stalk yield, aboveground dry biomass and harvest index of maize. The analysis of variance indicated that cropping system revealed significant effect on yield and yield components of maize where significant reduction was found under intercropped plots. The higher (4220.9 kg/ha) grain yield of maize was recorded when maize was planted with Awash 2 variety of haricot been in 1:1 row arrangement after one week of its emergence. Evaluation of the land use efficiency of the system in terms of land equivalent ratio (LER) showed more than unity in all intercrop. However, the highest (1.4) LER was obtained when maize crop was planted with Awash2 variety of haricot bean in 1:1 row arrangement after one-week emergence of maize crop. Economic analysis showed that the highest (65244.87 ETB ha-1 ) net benefit with acceptable level of MRR was achieved when Awash2 variety of haricot bean was intercropped with maize after one-week emergence of maize crop in 1:1 row arrangement. So, planting of Awash2 haricot bean variety after one-week emergence of maize in 1M:1HB row arrangement was the best among the treatments and it is recommended for the study area.
