Abstract:
Municipal Solid waste is currently a major environmental and social concern that needs all rounded problem solving approach. Especially in urban areas, the problems increase from time to time due to rapid urbanities. The purpose of this study was to assess, the municipal solid waste management system and finally to design sanitary landfill for Addis Zemen town. The investigation was conducted by preparing questioners, interviews, measurements, field observation and by using AutoCAD software the sanitary landfill was designed. From the result the solid waste generation per households, per capital and total weight per day were 0.87kg/day, 0.27kg/cap/day and 142.10kg/day obtained respectively. Due to sorting analysis, the highest composition of solid waste was ash with a percentage of 34% and the lowest composition was other which contributes (2%) of the total solid waste collected. From the total municipal solid waste, 56% generates from residential, 32% from the business area and the rest obtained from institutions. 57% of the total generation of municipal solid waste was biodegradable. The sanitary landfill was designed based on the accumulated total volume after 20 (projected) years was calculated as 259,698 meter cub. But, from the total solid waste only 48% (124,655 meter cub) of waste would be dumped to landfill and the other can be used as compost preparation, recycle and would change to biofuel. Thus, 41,552 meter square area for solid waste dumping and 54,017 meter square as total area were used for landfill design. Assessments of municipal solid waste management system including design of sanitary landfill, was good for the town to be environmentally accepted, attractive and sustainable method of municipal solid waste management, which would be implemented.
