Ethiopian Deaf Associations' Perception and Satisfaction towards Sign Language Interpretation Service of Ethiopian Television Broadcast Channels

dc.description.abstract The purpose of this study was to assess the Ethiopian deaf associations' perception and satisfaction towards sign language interpretation service of Ethiopian television broadcast channels. The study employed an explanatory sequential mixed research design. Ethiopian national association for the deaf (Addis Ababa branch deaf members were the participant of this stud. 112 (M = 64 and F = 48) participants were selected using purposive sampling and comprehensive sampling technique. A literature-based instrument was used as a data collection instrument such as a questionnaire and interviews. The data were analyzed by using mean, standard deviation, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA. The finding showed that the deaf viewers did not perceive the sign language interpretation service on Ethiopian TV channels (M-2.40 and SD-.862). The quantitative result is consistent with the results of the interview questions. The interviewees responded that the sign language interpretation service was Amharic based interpretation as a result it is difficult especially for born-deaf people who had no clue about the Amharic letters. According to the result of the study, deaf viewer was not satisfied with the sign language interpretation service on Ethiopian TV channels (M- 2.19 and SD-.875). The results of the questionnaire indicated that there was perception and satisfaction difference of the deaf viewers toward sign language interpretation services provided by Ethiopian Television channels across their demographic characteristics (education level, and occupation status). Deaf viewer age, educational level and occupation had statistically significant mean score difference among deaf viewer perception toward sign language interpretation service on Ethiopian TV channels. There were statistically significance mean score differences among occupation of deaf viewer satisfactions toward sign language interpretation service on Ethiopian TV channels. Deaf viewers’ age and educational level had no statistically significant mean score difference among deaf viewer satisfaction toward sign language interpretation service on Ethiopian TV channels. Generally, almost all of the TV programs were not friendly with deaf audiences. This in turn made the audiences feel uncomfortable and affect their perception and satisfaction of sign language interpretation. en_US
