Abstract
ICT is one of the major instructional media in science subjects. This study sought to investigate the status of ICT utilization in teaching preparatory school physics in Bahir dar city administration. More specifically, the present study focused on the investigation of the availability of ICT infrastructure, teachers and students use of ICT in teaching and learning preparatory school physics. Besides, the present study explored major challenges related with ICT use. To these ends, a convergent parallel mixed method design has been used. The target population comprised 4 preparatory schools in Bahir Dar city administration selected purposively. Four preparatory school principals, 8 physics teachers and 177 students (81 girls and 96 boys) were involved in the study. Data were collected using questionnaires, interview, and observation. Descriptive statistical techniques (mean and percentage) and inferential statistics t-test have been used for data analysis. The main findings of the study showed that, ICT resources required to teach preparatory school physics were inadequate. Regarding the integration of ICT resources, data analysis revealed that teachers apply ICT facilities in teaching preparatory physics rarely or never at all. However, as the analysis exhibited students apply ICT facilities in teaching preparatory physics regularly or very regularly. Analysis also showed that, scarcity of ICT resources and occasional use of ICT resources for academic purposes among the major challenges of implementation. The present study recommends that the required ICT facilities that would enhance preparatory school physics teaching and learning should be fulfilled as much as possible.
