This paper presents on the production and characterization of sand paper from quartz. This project is entirely focused on the formulation and manufacture of silicon carbide abrasives using locally sourced raw materials. Even though there is high expansion of wood work garage, there is no production of sand paper production in our country. Sand paper can be produced from locally sourced materials by processing them in the furnace for abrasive preparation. Abrasive materials are materials of extreme hardness that are used to shape other materials by rubbing or abrading action on the materials to be smoothed. The raw materials used to made sand paper are quartz, charcoal, sodium carbonate, sodium chloride and saw dust which are mixed in the furnace to form silicon carbide abrasive grain. The optimum formulation gave percentage proportions as quartz 310gm, coal 130gm, sodium carbonate 45gm, sodium chloride 5gm and saw dust as 4gm with hardness value of 4.3 RH. The mixture was first formulated at constant temperature and time to choose best composition and then fired the best composition in a furnace at different temperature of 1000oC, 1300oC and 1600oC and time of 5, 7 and 9 hours to get optimum melting point. After melting of the mixture the hardness of each abrasive was measured and the hardest abrasive was recorded at the temperature of 1600oC for 9 hours. Silicon carbide abrasive was crushed and sieved into coarse, medium and fine grades of abrasive grains. Finally there are three types of sand paper were prepared by using abrasive, adhesive and backing material for different purpose of sanding.
