Abstract:
Wastewater generated from Bahir Dar Textile Factory that has a potential hazard to the
environment by introducing various contaminants such as lead and zinc metals into soil and
water resources. The adsorption characteristics of Zn2+ and Pb2+ ions found in wastewater
onto a carbonized rice husk surfaces were investigated with respect to changes in the pH of
the solution, and contact time. The aim of this work was to evaluate the fundamental aspects
of sorption of Pb (II) and Zn (II) metal species using carbonized rice husk. Batch adsorption
experiments were carried out in order to evaluate the metal uptake and to optimize condition
of the adsorption. The solution was prepared synthetically in the laboratory by taking 5.5
ppm and 4.5 ppm concentrations of lead and zinc metal solutions respectively. The optimized
values of pH and contact time were obtained. The results revealed that removal of 92.3% for
the lead at a pH of 4 and 120 minute contact time was obtained, and 89.8% removal of zinc
was obtained at a pH of 4, and 120minute contact time. pH of Sample was adjusted to the
required level by using 0.1M HCl and NaOH solution. Langmuir isotherm was demonstrated
to provide the best correlation for the adsorption of lead and zinc.
Generally, from the study, it was observed that carbonized rice husk had good adsorptive
efficiency.
