dc.description.abstract Starch is the most commonly used pharmaceutical excipient in the manufacture of tablets. The present study investigated the potato starch, which is used to prepare pharacetamol. The properties of potato starch extracted and its physio-chemical properties as well as chemical composition were determined. The extraction process was carried out using difference concentration of sodium chloride. The range of starch yield is 15-97.1%. The highest yield of starch was obtained by treatment 0.14M NaCl which was 97.1%. The proximate composition of the starch on dry weight basis was found to be in the range from 0.004% to 0.194% ash, and 13.37% to 25% protein. The amylose content was in the range from 23.33% to 38.16%. Its size, hydration capacity, bulk density, fat and pH values were in the range from 0.2mm, 1.006g/g, 0.66g/ml, 0.11% and 7.1 to 1.5mm, 1.04g/g, 0.983g/ml, 0.2% and 6.8, respectively. The standard values of moisture content, yield, protein, fat, amylose content, pH, size, hydration capacity and bulk density are in the range of 14-18%, 15-97.1%, 0.05%, 0.1- 0.2%, 20-35%, 5.5-7.5, 0.001 to more than 7.5mm, 1-1.83g/g and 0.7-0.8g/ml, respectively. All of these proximate composition and physicochemical properties of the potato starch are in the range of standard values. Therefore, the results of the physicochemical characterization of potato starch study of the starch in the paracetamol tablet formulations indicate that potato can be used as an alternative source of starch for applications in the pharmaceutical industry. en_US
