Abstract:
The research is intended to study the effect of opening location, effect of opening location with varying strength of concrete and effect of vertical and horizontal web reinforcement at opening of reinforced deep beams. The research has both experimental tests and numerical simulation and uses the ultimate capacity to study their effect. Numerical analysis is done using finite element software, ABAQUS. Three locations were selected to provide opening i.e. two locations are provided outside the struts zone while the third location is provided at the strut zones. Twenty eight specimens with different parameter have used to study the effect of parameters. Both experimental and numerical simulation results have shown similar failure pattern and fairly accurate stress regions with strut and tie model analysis and design assumption of deep beam. Effect of opening on deep beam is more severe when openings exist at strut paths and has lesser effect when opening is located at center. Relatively, horizontal plain strengthening bars around the opening have shown pronounced effect than vertical plain bars and their significance varies as opening location varies. Rate of reduction due to opening at different location is relatively higher for C33.04/41.3 concrete than C20/25 concrete.
