Abstract:
The study focused on Assessment of hydrological aspect of inter-road drainage system challenges in Debre Tabor town. This study was specifically made on eleven selected catchments inside Debre Tabor town. The materials and software used for this study were GPS device, measuring tape, digital camera, Arc GIS tool, Google Earth Software, Easy Fit 5.6 Professional software andAuto CAD. The study was employed both primary data (field survey and information that will be gathering from the residents about the drainage channels) and secondary data (rain fall data, topographic data, previously documented data/Debre Tabor city infrastructure asset management plan/, etc.) collection.From easy fit test analysis log Pearson type III method of frequency analysis was the best fit and it was applied for this thesis. By using log Pearson type III method the maximum annual rainfall (XT) was determined. Shorter duration rainfall (Rt) was determined from annual maximum rainfall. Then intensity (i) for each shorter duration rainfallswas determined.Finally IDF curve was developed using intensity versus time for return periods such as 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 years. Using the sum of time of concentrationsof sheet, shallow and channel flow design intensities were obtained. Rational method was used for hydrologic analysis since all delineated area of catchments was less than 0.5 km2.Hydraulic analysis is done by using manning formula for existing drainage channels capacity determination. From the analysis result drainage channels such as C1, C3, C4, C5 and C6 were hydraulically adequate but cannot convey peak flow due to challenges and constraints such as Silt accumulation, Damping of different materials, damping of soil, stone and wood by residents to cross drainage channels, Clogging of inlets and lack of attendant inspection, clearing, maintenance and proper management. The rest of drainage channels such as C2,C7,C8,C9,C10 and C11were hydraulically inadequate. To improve adequacy redesignstorm pipes were set as a solution.
