Abstract:
Surface water quality is critical issue since used in domestic, agricultural, and industrial purpose. The aim of this study was to assess surface water quality and suitability for drinking and irrigation purpose in the case of Amen River, Dangila Town, Amhara national regional state, Ethiopia. To accomplish this objective, dry and wet season water quality monitoring results consisting of 12 physico-chemical and biological parameters (T, EC, Tub, TDS, PH, DO, BOD5, NO3 and PO4, Pb, Fe and TC) were examined at 10 sampling stations(S-1,S-2,S-3, S-4, S-5,S-6,S-7,S-8,S-9 & S-10),where S-1 & S-10 taken as control/upper stream and lower stream respectively and others for middle sample site were determined. The results were compared with standards prescribed by WHO (2008) and FAO (1989) for drinking and irrigation purpose consecutively. All except turbidity and lead, physico-chemical and biological parameters determined mean values both spatially and seasonal variation statistically significant at α value of 0.05 since P < 0.05. Besides, the mean differences of determined parameters between sample stations were statistically significant except turbidity and lead but seasonally all parameters mean values were statistically significant. On other hand, water quality index results were determined by using the CCME WQI of Amen River thus the values were found ranged between 26 to 33 and 36 to 45 for drinking and irrigation suitability respectively. This indicates that water quality fall under simply poor water category except s-1 &S-2 under marginal for irrigation purpose. This study showed that Amen river water is polluted (due to Surface run off, car washing, agricultural wastes, Abattoir‟s, open land fill, domestic and commercial wastes, industrial and public organization wastes), and is not suitable for both drinking and irrigation purpose unless properly treated. This will assist the decision makers in identifying priorities to improve water quality of Amen River that has been deteriorated due to pollutants from various anthropogenic activities in urban activities of Dangila town.
