Abstract:
Shampooismostwidelyusedasacosmeticproductbasicallyasasubstitutefor chemical-baseddetergentduetosuitableadditivesforotherbenefitssuchashair conditioningenhancement,lubrication,medication,etc.Ethiopiaisimportingdifferent typesofshampoo.ButEthiopiaisendowedwithdifferentplantswhichcanbeusedas bio-cosmeticproductswithnohealtheffectonhumanbodies.Amongthedifferent plants,thecactuscladodeisthepotentialcandidateforbio-cosmeticproduction. Cladodecontainsmainlywater,proteins,fats,carbohydrate,ash,calcium,vitaminC andcarotenoids.Themainfocusofthisstudywasontheformulationandevaluation ofcactuscladodeshampooandcomparisonofwithcommercialshampoosbasedonan anionicsurfactantconcentration(%SLS)andageofthecladode(0.5,1and1.5years) variations.Toformulatecactuscladodeshampoo;10-15%amountofSodiumlauryl 0.1%amountofformaldehydewasaddedtoaround50%distilledwaterthenwarming themixturesto50℃mixedgentlytoavoidmakinganyfoamanduntilallingredients havecompletelyhomogenizedanddissolved.Inadditiontothis1.5%salicylicacid, 1%ethanoland0.1%EDTAwereaddedandmixedgently.Themixturewasmixed softlywhileheatingtoinhibittheformationoffoambeforebeingcooledslowly.The pHwasmeasuredatthispointandwherenecessary0.1%sodiumhydroxideorcitric acidwasaddedtoobtainapHof5–6.Next,previously20%preparedcactuscladode juicewasaddedtocladodeshampooformulation,afterwhichitwasmixedgentlyand thentoppedupwithwaterwhennecessaryandtheviscositywasadjustedbymerge 2%ofsodiumchloridesolutionAfterformulatingtheshampoo,theproductwas characterizedandcomparedwiththeselectedAloeVeraandDoveshampoos.The meanproximateanalysisofcladodejuiceofyearoneshowsamoisturecontentof87%, solidcontentof12.75%and64mlfoamheight.Theageofcladodehasasignificant effect(p<0.05)onmoisturecontent,totalsolidcontentandfoamvolumeofthejuice.
