Although the construction industry in Ethiopia has been growing rapidly for the last ten years, it is still at its infant stage in utilizing advanced materials and advanced construction techniques such as composite materials including steel and concrete. The utilization of such composite materials is limited primarily because of the lack of manufacturing industries that produce standardized steel profiles in the country. Such challenges forced structural engineers not to utilize the high strength and ductility advantages that can be gained from the composite nature of steel-concrete structures. However, it is prudent to consider locally available steel sections available in our country that can be used to get easy and efficient steel-concrete composite structural configuration. This paper tries to contribute toward this effort by using easily available sheet metals, which are currently used as formworks, window and door fabrication, as a structural element infilled in/within concrete. Such sheets metals configured to form circular and continuous multi-layers filled with concrete in order to make composite columns. The study considers modeling and analysis of different cases of multi-layered metal sheets in circular columns filled with concrete. The effects of thickness, number of layers, diameter, length, axial capacity, load-moment interaction and ductility parameters were studied. The analysis is conducted using a general purpose finite element program ABAQUS. The analysis results were validated using experimental test results. The analysis outputs shows multi-layering of metal sheet significantly increases the axial load carrying capacity of concrete by giving an adequate confinement for concrete core. It also decreased the deformation of the column. Multi-layered composite columns had higher ductility and significantly improves its moment capacity. It is hoped that the study will give a basis for the modeling, analysis and design of such multilayered composite columns which are mainly used for construction of multi-story buildings, rail way supporting piers and high way bridge piers.
