dc.description.abstract With the expansion of cities it is required to construct high storey buildings, bridges and other structures. Composite construction has been proven to be promising for multi storey buildings. As a result, composite columns have recently been used very often. Columns that are designed to resist the majority of axial force by concrete alone can be further economized by the use of steel structure. But, its design involves tedious calculations. This study solves this challenge by developing interaction diagrams involving axial forces and moments. It presents design aids for fully and partially concrete-encased columns. It also summarizes important behaviors of concreteencased columns as compared to other column types. The purposes of the charts are to–enable easy determination of the necessary cross-sectional dimensions and to assist in the determination of the capacity of a given cross-section when the size and relevant material properties of concrete and steel are known in advance. The proposed charts may be used for short columns. The proposed charts will be used for general cross-sectional shapes since their developmentis based on non -dimensional parameters. The charts are developed for steel cross-sectional shapes of I section, with depth to width ratio 0.75, 1,1.25 and 1.5 and concrete of grade C25 and C30 & steel grade of Fe 430 Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the application of the charts for the design of composite cross-sections. en_US
