The main objective of this study is to test and analyze the effectiveness of Quarry Dust (QD) as a stabilizer on the Geotechnical Properties of Black Cotton Soils (BCS) in Bahirdar; due to the reason that Black Cotton Soils become an alarming worldwide problem. The rapid growth of population, fast urbanization, more construction of buildings and high ways and other structures has demanding good quality available land. There is no choice for People except to use soft and weak soils around their for construction activities. Such soil possesses poor Shear Strength and high Swelling & Shrinkage. The mechanical behavior of such nature of soil has to be improved by employing Stabilization and Reinforcement techniques for construction activities. BCS is one of the major issues in Ethiopia. When exposed to variation in moisture they undergo high Swelling and Shrinkage making it more complicated specially for geotechnical and structural engineering. Quarry Dust is a type of solid waste material that is obtained from aggregate crushing industries. Disposal of such waste materials creates lots of problems to the environment and public. Considering this an experimental study was conducted on locally available BCS by mixing it with QD. QD is added to black Cotton Soil and Stabilization takes place. This study presents the variation of some of the Index and Engineering Properties of Black Cotton Soil when it is mixed with different percentages (0%, 10%, 20% and 30%) of QD and the results were found that up to the addition of QD there is an increase in strength parameters. The test results shows that QD can be effectively utilized as stabilization material for Black Cotton Soils with Optimum Quarry Dust content up to 30% for Expansive Soils of high to marginal Swelling Potential. It is recommended based on the results of this research that QD can be suited as a viable option for stabilization of foundation bases and subgrade founded on Black Cotton Soils after conducting durability tests. It will particularly help use of marginal materials where materials that met standard specifications are costly and impossible to get with in an economical range.
