Torrefaction is a thermal pretreatment method used to upgrade the properties of biomass, such as heating value, energy density, hydrophobicity and grindability that makes it economically viable as fuel under inert environment. This study presented the torrefaction of sugarcane bagasse in both dry and chemical treatment methods and compared their corresponding physicochemical properties and thermal analysis relative to raw bagasse. The thermal analysis was examined by thermogravimetric analysis. Thermochemical torrefaction was carried out by pretreatment of raw bagasse with dilute sulfuric acid followed by heating at 220-280°с in inert environment, whereas dry torrefaction conducted using the same heating treatment without the addition of chemical to the raw bagasse. The sample was torrefied at 220,240,260, and 280, for 30, 60, 90, and 120min. The results showed that the chars produced by chemical torrefaction were found having improved properties like; heating value, energy and bulk density at 280°с and 120min. Decrease in moisture content and volatile matter was observed with increasing temperature resulting high fixed carbon content. The mass yield and energy yield were found to be decreased with temperature and time. Heating value and energy density of the sample were increased to 20.34 MJ/Kg and 1.27 in dry and 22.29MJ/Kg and 1.39 in chemical torrefaction with increasing temperature and residence time respectively. The carbon content of torrefied bagasse was increased with temperature and time, whereas, hydrogen and oxygen content were decreased.
