Sesame seed oil is Ethiopian‘s locally produced traditional food oil which is produced from sesame seed, traditionally it is extracted by the camel powered pressing process. The heat required for the extraction process is obtained from burning firewood, due to that deforestation and greenhouse gas is emitted to the environment. Besides, this traditional oil extraction method is labor, and time intensives which are the major negative impacts. This thesis work presents the designing and manufacturing of 2.96m2 Scheffler reflector system for sesame oil extraction process as a substitute energy source instead of camel pressing traditional machine. In order to show design procedure; scheffler reflector system with aperture diameter of 1.125m and 0.80m, and focal length of 0.76m was designed. The Scheffler reflector based solar distiller is designed for oil extraction for 10kg of sesame to obtain 5 liters of oil per day and the theoretical calculated heat energy and thermal efficiency are 1.55kwh and 42%, respectively. (i.e. from 9:00AM to 3:00PM). Theoretically, in one cycle which takes on average 2 hours to yield 5 liters of oil from 10 kg of sesame seed. The test result in our prototype shows that it is possible to obtain 1.1 liters of oil from 2 kg of sesame powder the average extraction time it took is 2:30 h. The reason why it takes this much time is due to fluctuation of sun radiation data. The temperature of water was reached 65oC which is found on distillation still in Bahir Dar at atmospheric pressure of 1atm, where the test was conducted. The overall system efficiency of the experimental is 41.8%. So, with suitable design and fabrication of solar thermal energy oil distiller system for sesame oil extraction can be an alternative source of sustainable energy displayed promising results and has the potential to mitigate the negative impacts related to traditional sesame oil extraction method. Initial cost of scheffler solar oil distiller was approximately (10000ETB). The payback period of this scheffler reflector solar based oil extraction when compared with traditional camel extraction method is 0.22 and 1.07 year respectively. Initial cost of scheffelr solar distiller and traditional method was estimated (10000 ETB) and (31280 ETB) respectively. the net present value of scheffler reflector and traditional method 57818ETB and 34416ETB respectively. Around 23,000ETB profitable per year by using solar based oil distiller. Finally, based on the points outlined above scheffler reflector have an advantage over traditional camel oil extraction. This study is very important in north west Ethiopian low land area, because Ethiopia is an energy deficient country. Moreover, solar technologies are environmental friendly.
