Asella DN is selected as case study in which customers has complained due to highly rated power outage in the distribution system. Asella DN is radial in nature that makes them vulnerable to customer interruption due to single outage event. Whenever power outage in the distribution system, the utility has to perform fault management activities based on customer and substation operator outage calls, up on receiving trouble call, the utility will then dispatch maintenance crew to find a fault occurs. The maintenance crew will at first locate the fault location through visual tracing or try and error testing and then implement the manual switching scheme to conduct fault isolation and power restoration. This conventional manual power restoration method might take several hours or days to restore to normal operation. To limit the scope of the study, Asella feeder line-4 is selected to improve the radial DN reliability. In this thesis, the primary as well as secondary data have been collected from Asella utility and Asella substation respectively. Asella feeder line-4 has been evaluated based on the analytical simulation approaches with ETAP 16 software using load point to determine the performance of reliability indices. The existing system data analysis has given that SAIDI is equal to 666.8905hrs/cust./yrs, SAIFI is 341.8082f/cust./yrs and EENS is 10,037,460 Mwhrs/yrs. These result have been compared to bench marking; the result shows that Asella feeder line-4 is unreliable. Based on the site visit and conducted analysis, This thesis has proposed the division of the DN in to manageable area/zone and application of FLISR technology for protection of each zone to give better service provision, it is advisable to replace the traditional method of FLISR by automatic FLISR in the DN using electronic control recloser with integration of PLC and wireless RF communication. This is applied to each division of zone protection that is restored by alternative supply through Tie switching mechanism from adjacent healthy feeders. This thesis considered five case studies and the distribution reliability indices, SAIDI and SAIFI have reduced to 89.48hrs/cust/yrs and 58.1f/cust/yrs respectively. They were improved by 86.58% and 83% respectively and EENS has reduced to 1,308,361mwh/yrs i.e. it also improved by 86.97%.
