Abstract:
The current total power generation of Ethiopia reached 12,536.69 GWh/yr from its interconnected system. Electricity Access Rate distribution of Ethiopia in urban area above 92% among 27.7% nationally but in rural area only 1% were grid connected and above 7.7 million households will need alternative off grid lighting solution. In current rural Ethiopia lighting system dominantly existed on solar PV light, kerosene light, dry cell battery light or torch and biogas light, in a very small manner there exist taper light, candle light, fuelwood light. This research focuses on the techno-economic analysis of lighting technology based on the basic load demand of 309 households in Mecha Wereda Amarit Kebele in Amhara Region Ethiopia. The economic analysis of solar PV light, biogas light, kerosene and dry cell battery light was analyzed using the economic equation and HOMER software. The technical and economic performance of the different lighting system in Amarit kebele were analyzed based on saving of energy, cost effective, quality of intensity light(lumens), carbon dioxide emissions avoided, availability with accessibility of the technology in rural area, and efficiency of light. The life span of solar PV light and biogas light performed 20 years, the capital interest rate is 7% and fixed running cost (1%). The payback period of solar PV light and biogas light would be 4.67year and 6.707 years respectively. 10w solar PV light three LED lamp (each lamp 3w) were used to economic analysis of using HOMER simulation program the initial investment cost is 2200ETB, the NPV would be 8630ETB. The solar PV light has a better performance for carbon dioxide emissions avoided and light quality’s for 10w solar PV light three LED lamp (each lamp 3w) emits 480 lumens, but, biogas light is the best energy saver and cost effective among the existed lighting system it is used to both cooking and lighting. In single house 6m3 fixed dome plant camartec design biogas light the NPV would be 30330ETB, initial investment17410ETB. Kerosene light is environmental polluted light the annual CO2 emission in a single house is 0.0366096 tone/year, the annual expense in a single house is 2094ETB/year and easily accessible every were of Amarit kebelies small shops. Based on the data dry cell battery light is highly extravagancy next to kerosene light the annual expense of a single house was 480ETB/year and 34% are available next to solar PV light among other lighting system existed in Amarit kebele.
