Abstract:
The study was carried out to assess the management practices, opportunities, constraints, profitability of small-scale chicken production enterprises and to evaluate growth, survivability and egg production performance of exotic chicken breeds in urban and peri-urban areas of Bahir Dar City from 2018 to 2019. Data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires, focused group discussion, monitoring and field observation. A total of 33 small-scale chicken enterprises (30 from urban and 3 from peri-urban areas) were considered in this study. In addition, 480 day-old chicken from urban and 120 day-old chicken from peri-urban areas were monitored on 10 randomly selected farms to evaluate growth performance, survivability and to evaluate the egg production performance of survived chicken breeds. All survey data collected were analyzed using SPSS software Version 20. Monitored data were analyzed with ANOVA using the GLM procedure of SAS version 9.0. The result of the study indicated that the majority of chicken producers (90.9 %) reared Bovans Brown chicken breed and the rest (9.1 %) reared Sasso T44 breed. The average chicken flock size per farm in urban and peri-urban areas were 900.9 ± 76.45 and 700 ± 175.59 chicks, respectively. Only 30.3 % of chicken producers constructed chicken coops based on the recommended packages and the rest 69.7 % chicken producers didn’t construct chicken coop following the recommended housing packages. The on-farm monitoring result revealed that there was a significant difference (p< 0.001) between the interaction of breeds and production systems of producers on the growth performance of chicken. Sasso T44 had higher daily body weight gain (10.66 ± 0.03 g) and total body weight gain (1642 ± 5.02 g) within 22 weeks of age in the urban areas. The mortality rates for Bovans Brown in the urban and peri-urban areas were 7.02 % and 7.8 2 %, respectively whereas the
