Abstract:
This study explored the lived experiences of elder beggars in Debre Tabor town. The study
employed a qualitative approach, especially phenomological design. Ten elders who were
engaged in begging were involved in the research. Accidental sampling technique was used in
order to recruit participants. Interview and observation were used to collect data from
participants. Data were analyzed thematically, the analysis passed through the process of
transcribing, translating, categorizing, and interpreting. Results showed that elder beggars
experienced diverse challenges like problem of getting food and cloth, house, problem of health
and also physical and psychological difficulties. Participants tried to cope those challenges by
cutting meal, drying, buying the cheapest food. Some of them drink local liquor to temporally
forget their hardships, self-medication, reporting to the police, sharing feelings, adapting the
situation and using religious practices are the other coping strategies adopting by the elder
beggars. Finally, Implication for psychological policy, practice, and research are suggested.
