ABSTRACT
Temperature and precipitation variations have a huge environmental, social and economic impact. Due
to lack of ground based data, the researcher uses satellite data of TRMM form 1998-2018 and ARISdata
from 2002-2018 to assess trends of temperature and precipitation over Awi zone located in 10°23'N and
10°85'N latitudes and 36°35'E and 36°57'E longitudes. In this study we applied descriptive statistical
methods; linear regression, linear correlation and standard anomaly index(SAI) which is supplemented
by Mann-Kendall test(MK). The results indicate that the mean monthly values of temperature and
precipitation are showing decreasing trend which was statistically insignificant. The study area seems
had bimodal precipitation nature. Except spring season, other seasons and annual precipitation trends
over the study area seems had negative trend of statistically insignificant with the rate of
0.007,0.005,0.003 and 0.002.Both MK test and SAI shows the study area had normal precipitation pattern
in the time scale and statistically insignificant change. The results of monthly temperature trend shows
decreased except July and September. Seasonal temperature trend seems statistically significant at spring
and winter, whereas statistically insignificant at summer and Autumn. Spring, which had statistically
significant negative trend decreases with the rate of 0.134
o
c/year. This may be the effect of positive trend
of precipitation at a spring season over the study area. The annual temperature had statistically
significant negative trend at confidence level of 0.05. In the correlation analysis among seasons, spring
season the most correlated negatively with temperature and precipitation (-0.80).In general, the annual
correlation analysis between temperature and precipitation had negative (-0.39). |
