Abstract:
This thesis is aimed to study diurnal, monthly, seasonal and spatial variation of ionospheric
TEC obtained from GPS satellite in the years of 2014 and 2015. TEC data measured by dualfrequency
signals of the Global Position System (GPS) in two Ethiopian low latitude stations,
such as Bahir Dar (BDAR) with geographic latitude (11:6
0
N) and Longitude (37:35
E) and
Arba Minch (ARMI) with geographic latitude (6:06
0
N) and Longitude(37:57
E) during the years
2014 and 2015. The processed and archived data taken from GPS receiver has been imported in
to a MATLAB code which gave us the results of the value of TEC. The results show that the
diurnal variation TEC minimum between 23:00 UT to 02:00 UT or 17:00 h ELT to 20:00 h ELT;
maximum at about 12:00 to 14:00 UT or 06:00 h ELT to 08:00 h ELT. As regards to monthly
variations of ionospheric TEC, results of GPS satellite shows that highest mean TEC value is
recorded on March and July recorded the least peak TEC value. The seasonal variation of TEC
maximizes during the equinox months followed by winter months especially July. The latitudinal
variation of ionospheric TEC at Bahir Dar is higher than Arba Minch. In addition to this we have
also seen correlations between geomagnetic activity and TEC.
