Graphene oxide (GO) films with two-dimensional structure were successfully prepared by the modified Hummer method from oxidation of natural flak graphite with sulfuric acid, sodium nitrate and potassium permanganate. The reduced graphene oxide was obtained by photo reduction of graphene oxide using UV-visible light irradiation. Absorption spectroscopy shows the decreasing band gap of GO with reduction time increase. This study evaluated the potential of graphene oxide (GO) and copper/copper oxide decorated reduced grapheme oxide (Cu/CuO-RGO) towards photocatalytic degradation of a novel organic dye, Methylene Blue (MB). In this work, photocatalytic activity of graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and Cu/CuO-RGO were tested by photodegrading Methylene Blue (MB) in aqueous solution. The resulted GO,RGO and Cu/CuO-RGO nanoparticles were characterized by uv-visible spectroscopy,FT-IR and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Based on our results, it was found that the resulted RGO and Cu/CuO-RGO nanoparticles achieved 99% and 99.5% respectivly photodecolorization of MB compared to ~96% for GO under Uvvisible light irradiation at pH~7 in 60 min.
