Abstract Getting clear signal communication, easy navigation and access of accurate posi- tioning is very challenging due to the impact of severe scintillation and its variability. Amplitude scintillation index is a day-to-day variability. Due to these characteristics, the occurrence of scintillation index in both 2012 and 2016 and its correlation with simulated equatorial spread F region (ESF) were studied at Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.S4 index is the amplitude parameter that has been used to investigate the ionospheric scintillation impact on quality of GPS or GNSS satellite signals. Amplitude iono- spheric scintillation (S4 index) is a disruption for technological signal communication, navigation and a loss of accuracy in the position determination. Signi cant e orts are being carried out to determine the occurrence of severe ionospheric scintillation index; however, the equatorial ionosphere that shows unique phenomena and variabil- ity. In this thesis, the temporal and statistical characteristics of amplitude ionospheric scintillation(S4 index) and equatorial ionosphere irregularities over Bahir Dar region is investigated using the data from SAMI3 model and SCINDA GPS receiver. We found that the density uctuation of ion species and severe scintillation index are a post sunset phenomenon that is observed from 19LT to 23LT and sometimes post- midnight from 0LT to 1:30LT in this study area. In addition, the occurrence of severe S4 index has been observed more frequently in the March and April months than any other months in both 2012 and 2016.
