Intestinal parasitic infections are one of the major and serious medical and public health problems in developing countries including Ethiopia. Effective prevention and control of IPIs require the identification of local risk factors. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Intestinal Parasitic Infections and associated risk factors among individuals visiting Nefas Mewucha Primary Hospital, South Gondar, Ethiopia. A cross sectional study was conducted from September 2017 to February 2018 involving a total of 403 study subjects. Socio-demographic data and possible risk factors for the occurrence of Intestinal Parasitic Infection were collected using pre-tested structured questionnaire. Whereas the parasitological study of stool specimens, was done using wet mount and formol ether concentration techniques. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20. The overall prevalence of Intestinal Parasitic Infection in the present study was 49.4 % (199/403), for at least one intestinal parasite. Of the seven species of intestinal parasites identified, the most prevalent were Entamoeba histolytica/dispar 41.2% (166/403) followed by Giardia intestinalis 10.7 % (43/403), Ascaris lumbricoides 2.2% (9/403), Enterobius vermicularis 0.99% (4/403), Taenia saginata 0.74% (3/403), Trichuris trichiura 0.2% (1/403) and Hymenolepis nana 0.2% (1/403). The prevalence of double infections was 6.9% (28/403). In this study, a statistical significance association was observed between Intestinal Parasitic Infection and the following risk factors; hand washing habit, eating unwashed/undercooked vegetation, sleeping with pets on the same bed, education level and use of untested water regularly (p<0.05). The results demonstrated a high magnitude of symptomatic IPIs in the study area. Simple health promotion actions including education along with deworming program must be scaled-up to sustainably reduce the burden of IPIs in the community.
