dc.description.abstract Maize weevil (Sitophilus species) is one of the most destructive insect pests of stored cereals. Loss of maize due to storage pests is crucial to ensure food security in Ethiopia. Over use of chemical insecticides causes different environmental problems. Botanical insecticides compared to synthetic ones may be safer for the environment. This study was conducted to examine the anti-weevil property of the smokes of Allium cepa, Capscum annum, Juniperous procera and Otostegia integreifolia against maize weevil (Sitophilus species). The experimental plants were collected from different areas of Amhara region. Maize had been collected from farmers and traders in and around Bahir Dar Zuria woreda. The study was carried out in Bahir Dar University, Biomedical Research Laboratory. Toxicity and germination tests were conducted. The collected plants were air dried under shade. Forty five plastic jars each containing 20 g of maize grains and 20 adult weevils were smoked by plant smokes and stayed covered for six, twelve, twenty four hours. Mortality was observed at the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, fourteenth and twenty first days. Germination test was done by randomly taking 20 maize grains from each experimental and control group. C. annum and J. procera were the most effective weevil killers (85%) and (95%) respectively. Among the grains exposed to the smoke for 24 hours followed by A. cepa and O. integreifolia (61.7%) and (85%) respectively. Twenty four hours exposure time was very effective than 6 and 12 hours time of exposure. Mortality steadily increased with increase in days after treatment. Smokes of all the four experimental plants had no negative effect on maize grain germination. Key words: Maize weevil, insecticidal activity, plant smoke en_US
