Abstract:
Social support, with different kinds of provision by social networks, plays important roles in treatment, survival and rehabilitation programs for people with mental illness. The lack or limited provision of it to people with mental illness brings a challenge with psychological adjustment, better copying with upsetting events, resistance to diseases, recovery from disease and reduced mortality. This study employed concurrent exploratory mixed methods design. Questionnaires for quantitative study and interview and focus group disscusion for qualitative part were employed as data gathering instrument. A total of 344 participants out of which 172 families of people with mental illness and 172 patients were selected randomly and 17 participants were selected purposively. The data collected quantitatively were analyzed by descriptives statistics and multilinear regression and the qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis method. The quantitative result revealed that the status of social support provided by family members is at low level. Simillarly, the result obtained from patients showed the status of percieved support is low. In the study, some associated factors that could affect social support provision were assesed. The qualitative study participants stated that there are three major aspects of social networks for supportive conditions of social support. These have been found to be aspects related to the providers of the supports, the recievers and environmental factors. Based on the findings, advocacy, promotion and collaboration are recommended for better social support provision on mental illness.
