environment of the Wäräda for the last 100 years. In the reconstructing process of the
environmental history of the Wäräda, the researcher collected data from informants who
adopted the changes and the deal through semi structured interview and focused group
discussion. The other source of data was archival materials from North Gondar Administrative
Zone and National Archive and Library that briefly informed the governments’ responses to the
changes happened in the district. Then, the researcher held ground truth checking system on the
study area. All data which were collected from these sources were discussed under various
themes. Furthermore, GIS analysis used to show land cover changes for twenty three year. The
study described the interaction of human beings with the environment, the change of the
environment and its influence on the lives of the people. The results showed that changes of the
environment were chiefly happened during the imperial regimes as well as the Därg.The reason
for environmental change was primarily the demand for more land for agriculture, fuel and
construction as well as for grazing land. Due to this the area was deforestation, soil bared and
land degradation. This sequentially affected the life of human beings as well as animals in Farţa
and surrounding regions. The major impacts of environmental change in the Wäräda were
temperature change, reduction of indigenous trees, and reduction of vegetables, water shortage
and others. Now a day all the land cover changes were transformed in to settlement and crop
lands at expend of very little forest and grazing land coverage. This change of the environment
caused for the occurrence of various problems such as drought, flood, disease and pests that
resulted the death of many peoples and animals in the district through out the century.
