dc.description.abstract Physical, chemical and biological techniques have been developed to monitoring the pollution level of water bodies. Aquatic macro invertebrate metrics are among the biological methods which have been used to identify the environmental stress resulting from a variety of anthropogenic disturbances. Fogeda River (head of Gumara River) crosses Arbgebeya town that results pollution from agricultural and domestic wastes. The aim of the study was to assess water quality in Fogeda River (head of GumaraRriver) using physicochemical and macro-invertebrate metrics. Three sites were selected along the river (upstream of the town, in the town and after the river leave the town). Physicochemical and macro invertebrate samples were collected at each study site from February to April 2018. These physicochemical parameters and macro invertebrate indicator samples were taken simultaneously at the same location. In total 27 pools and riffle samples were collected for three months. From the ten analyzed physicochemical parameters only two (turbidity and PO4) were found to be beyond the EPA standard. Dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, NO3 and NH3 showed significance difference among sampling sites whereas electrical conductivity, turbidity, temperature and PO4 were significantly different among months(p<0.05). There were no significant differences observed between Islam Mekabir and Chirchir in some physicochemical parameters. A total of 11,351 macro-invertebrate individuals belonging to 25 families were counted in all sites. Based on calculated metrics of macro invertebrates percent diptera, tolerance individuals, EPT, Chironomidae, Odonata and Ehemeroptera were significantly different among sites (p<0.05). Percent EPT, Ephemeroptera and Odonata were higher at Gobedin than Islam Mekabir and Chirchir but percent Diptera, Chironomidae and tolerance individuals were significantly lower at Gobedin than Islam Mekabir and Chirchir (p<0.05) which showed Islam Mekabir and Chirchir were found to be somewhat polluted as compared to Gobedin.Total dissolved solids, turbidity, nitrate, percent chironomidae (negatively) and Odonata (positively) weresignificantly correlated with dissolved oxygen (p<0.05). These physicochemical parameters and macro invertebrate metrics results indicate that the water quality of Fogeda River was somewhat impaired due to domestic wastes, washing clothes and watering cattle.
