This explorative study of experiences of non- kinship foster parents in the Bahir dae Administration was carried out in order to gain an understanding about this particular group of
parents and their subjectiveexperiences in relation to the care of their foster children. In order
to achieve the objective of the study, phenomenological qualitative research design was
emplo[ed. The data collection consisted of in depth interviews conducted with 12 non-kinship
foster parents, with an established interview protocol. The interviews transcribed and assessed
for emerging themes and commonalities and practices, benefits, challenges of fostering and

the family foster care practices starting from recruitment of families. Benefits of being foster
parent including the family cohesiveness, social acceptance and psychological benefits are
identified. The results show that the challenges facing foster parents are multifaceted and
including the initial adjustment period child emotional pain, challenge interactions with
biological parents, finances, training as well asrbehavioral challenges. The coping strategies to |
