Abstract:
The question of identity has become a new fashion in the contemporary federal Ethiopia. Various
communities have been raising questions related with the recognition of one’s ethnic identity.
Some claimants submitted their cases to the concerned authority and others don’t. Though the
number claimants have been increasing from time to time, the reason behind the emerging
questions of identities has not been addressed in the discussion about Ethiopian politics. Such a
gap in the academia gave birth to this study. The main objective is to explore the reasons
contained therein as regards the rise of identity question with a particular emphasis on the
question of Welkäyit. In order to achieve the desired objective(s) the study employed qualitative
research methodology. Furthermore, among the various qualitative research designs case study
research design is used in this study due to the fact that the question of Welkäyit brings an
important case to study Ethiopian federalism and constitution. The data were collected from both
primary and secondary sources.
The findings of the study reveals that the major reason behind the rise of identity question in
Welkäyit is related with the natural desire for recognition of one’s identity fueled by the
introduction of ethnic based federalism in Ethiopia. Besides, the nature of discourse that has
grown up around the question of identity raised by the people of Welkäyit indicated that the
question of Welkäyit had/has nothing to do with claiming a distinctive identity but it is
indisputably a quest for the restoration of their Amharanet. For that matter, had the regime
promoted Ethiopianism over regionalism, there would be no such a crisis in Welkäyit and other
parts of the country.
