Historically, the existence of road in Ethiopia was simply the result of the constant flow of
passengers, animals, erosion rather than of planned and intended construction activities. In
the 18th century, especially during the reign of Emperor Téwodros, although the technology
was too primitive, it was believed that planned road construction efforts were made. It was
at this time that the king connected Wällo with Gondar and Gojjam. During the Italian
occupation, considerable efforts were undertaken with regard to road infrastructural
development in Wällo. Initially, the road construction started as a preparation for war for
the early Italy-Ethiopian conflict. The road making activities followed the footsteps of the
invading forces that paved roads allowed easier and swifter passage of troops and supplies.
From a strategic point of view, the priority was given to link major towns of the time. Such
as Bägémdir and Semén linked with Wällo province (from Gondar to Dässé) via Däbra
Täbour and Wägäl Téna. However, attention was paid for quantity than quality. This
research is conducted under the title in the history of road construction in Wällo since 1936.
It is intended to investigate the road network progress in Wällo with the various
administrative regimes since the Italian occupation. Both primary and secondary sources
were attempted to be reviewed. Findings pointed out that, king Téwodros using the British
Missionaries built a road which connected Gondar with Wällo. It was totally 320 km earth
road. The history of road networking in Wällo was linked to war. The Italians for their safe
occupation of the province and to win the sympathy of the patriots, started to build road
linking Dässé with Addis Ababa, Mäkällé and Gondar. Hence the Dässé-Kutäbär- Wägäl
Téna road section was one in the case under discussion. The inauguration of the Imperial
Highway Authority in 1951 and latter ERA, RSDP and URRAP revolutionized road
construction in the country in general and Wällo Province in particular. Up to 1965 the
Imperial government was engaged in repairing the damaged roads of Italians. The opening
of the road on the other side of the coin helped the growth of towns like Dässé, Kombolća,
Bati, and Wäldiya. However, poor administration, civil wars, hunger, natural calamities
were hindrances to the growth of road infrastructure in the province. |
