Abstract:
RTA ~eaths and a number of survivors in Ethiopiafacing physical injuries. The purpose of the
study was to understand the lived experiences of RTA survivors in Bahir Dar City
Administration. This phenomenological study was conducted to explore challenges.
opportunities and coping mechanisms of RTA survivors. The data were collected through in
depth interview with eight RTA survivors. The collected data were analyzed using thematic
an,plysis method. Results of the study revealed that survivors experienced various challenges
such as bleeding and physical injuries, property loss, medical expense, and loss of job, isolation
including divorce, palliation of litigation, stress, fear and bearing of grudge. Family, private
hospitals, Bahir Dar city physical rehabilitation center and aditional physical therapists were
the existing opportunitiesfor survivors to reduce their challenges. Moreover, the study yielded
,
th,.selling property, changing occupation, seclusion and spirituality were mechanisms designed
by survivors to cope with their challenges. In sum, survivors were under vicious circle of
physical health, psychosocial, legal, medical and economic problems and they experienced less
availability of opportunities in solving and reducing these problems. As researches on the
experiences of RT A survivors in Ethiopia are limited, there is paucity of information on
survivors. Thus, this study may contribute to policy, evidence based social work practices and
future research.
