During the occupation period, Italian made Gondär, a capital of the Amhara region. The Italians designed a master plan for new region capital and subsequently they constructed many buildings for residential and administrative purposes known by their distinctive styles. These Italian buildings are found in different parts of the city. This thesis tries to examine all those Italian buildings built during the occupation period. The researcher has extensively used archival sources from North Gondär Administration Zone Archives (NGAZA) in addition, many informants have been interviewed. Besides, Photos, Maps, Books, Journals, Newspapers, and Electronic data and field trip notes were used. So far, the economic, social, historical and political importance of Italian buildings for the town has not been studied. The major former Italian town quarters in Gondär were still occupied by the Italian buildings. Those Italian buildings are serving as main hotels, apartments’ and the villas, group and individual residences, coffee shops, supermarkets, stores, garages and others are used Italian buildings. Therefore, Italian buildings have solved the shortage of houses and offices until this time. Following Ethiopian’s liberation, those Italian buildings came under the ownership of the royal family and prominent patriot leaders as well as the aristocracy. Although, member of the royal family collected rents from those buildings, they neglected their maintenances, the administration, mismanagement and the absence of documentation system about the general feature of the Italian buildings created information gaps for the architects. This kind of problems have been influenced the restructuring works and rebuilding programs in the town; mainly, in the former Italian quarters. For the matter of Awareness problems for Italian built drainage system the town has been lost. The existing Italian buildings still not identified on account of their pattern of service and ownerships. |
